6/12/06 11:56 am - Bruce Concert Review

Time to review last nights concert!

First, the few things that bugged me:

  • No one bothered to tell Deb & I that they were doing a drawing for up front "seating." We would have probably tried for it had we known.
  • Waiting in line to get in. They didn't open the gates until about 1/2 hr after they were supposed to open them. This was so the "special" people who got the up front "seating" could get in first.
  • "Seating" on the main floor. There was none. It was General Admission & a concrete floor. I should've worn better shoes. By the end of the night, my feet hurt up to my knees.
  • $6 beer. MGD was the high end of the selection. Sadly, I paid it because a beer sounded good. It was alright, but it wasn't $6 good.

Now, stuff I did like:

  • The band. This wasn't Bruce & the E Street Band, this was Bruce & the Seeger Sessions Band. At one point, I counted 19 people on stage, all singing, playing, or both. 19!
  • The horn section. How many rock concerts have you been to with a horn section! Gave the whole thing a very jazzy feel.
  • The tuba solo. Nope, not kidding. It was a bit of a joke (it was the end of the set and the rest of the band walked off stage playing. The tuba player "got caught up in the moment" and stayed out playing until Bruce came back out and tapped him on the shoulder) but it was fun.
  • The energy. Bruce & the whole band were having a good time & it really showed. I like concerts where the performers are really into it. It's contagious & the audience has more fun.
  • The encore. One song they did was a very somber version of "When the Saints Go Marching In." The song works just as well somber as it does happy.

Bruce mentioned New Orleans a LOT. They started the tour there, at Jazz Fest, and mentioned several times about how messed up the area was but also how great it was to perform there. Since there is a huge jazz influence on the current album, this makes a lot of sense.

Anyway, it was a pretty kick-ass show. I'm not sure I'd do general admission again at an indoor show, though. I like somewhere soft to be able to park my butt occasionally...
